Signs
- The site does not load at all, or times out
- A "500", "502", "503" or "database connection" error
- A page from your hosting company or domain registrar
- "This site can’t be reached" or "DNS address could not be found"
Usual causes
- The domain name expired
- Hosting payment failed or the account was suspended
- A plugin, theme or app update caused an error
- The server is overloaded or down
- DNS settings were changed
What you can check yourself
- Check from your phone on mobile data, not Wi-Fi, to rule out your own connection.
- Check your email for renewal or suspension notices from your domain registrar and host.
- Log in to your host and look for status or outage messages.
- If you changed something just before, such as an update, note exactly what.
When to get help
If the domain or hosting has expired, renew it straight away; there is often a short grace period. For anything else, get help quickly. Every hour down can mean lost enquiries.
