Browsers say my site is "Not secure"

A "Not secure" label next to your address, or a full-page certificate warning. Usually a certificate problem, and usually fixable the same day.

Signs

  • "Not secure" next to your web address
  • "Your connection is not private" warning
  • A padlock that is missing on some pages only

Usual causes

  • No SSL certificate installed
  • The certificate expired and did not renew
  • Some images or scripts still load over http
  • The site address changed and the certificate does not cover it

What you can check yourself

  1. Check whether your address starts with https.
  2. Ask your host whether a free certificate is available and switched on.
  3. Note which pages show the warning; if only some, mixed content is likely.

When to get help

If your site collects any details from visitors, fix this before anything else. Many visitors leave at the warning.
