Urgent

My domain is about to expire

An email says your domain will expire, or you are not sure who controls it. Losing a domain takes your website and email with it.

Signs

  • Renewal emails from a registrar
  • You do not know which company your domain is registered with
  • A former web designer registered it in their name

Usual causes

  • Auto-renew turned off or a card expired
  • The domain was registered by someone else on your behalf
  • Renewal emails going to an old address

What you can check yourself

  1. Look up your domain in a WHOIS or ICANN lookup to see the registrar and expiry date.
  2. Log in to the registrar and turn on auto-renew with a current card.
  3. Make sure the account email is one you check.
  4. Be careful of scam renewal notices from companies you have never used.

When to get help

If you cannot get into the account or someone else controls it, ask for help now, before it lapses. You should always own your domain in your own name.
