Many business owners find out too late that their domain or hosting is in a former designer’s name. Check now, while everyone is friendly.

The checklist

  • Domain registrar: the account is in your name and your email, with auto-renew on.
  • Hosting: you have your own login, or at least admin access.
  • Website admin: you have an administrator account on WordPress, Shopify, Squarespace or whatever you use.
  • DNS: you know where it is managed (often the registrar or Cloudflare).
  • Email: you have admin access to Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 or your email host.
  • Analytics and Search Console: you are an owner, not just a viewer.
  • Backups: you know where they are and how to restore.

Store them safely

Keep logins in a password manager, not a spreadsheet, and turn on two-factor authentication.

If someone else holds the keys

Ask politely for ownership to be transferred to you. Registrars have a process for this. If you are stuck, ask us.
